Happy Double-Bob Day!

  • Aug. 8th, 2008 at 9:59 AM
wha?
Today is Double-Bob day! The digital representation for today’s date is 8.08.08 which looks a lot like “Bob-ob” or “Bob-Bob”. My son and I often set deadlines for what we call “Bob-time”, so our household is already familiar with the concept. “Make sure your room is clean by Bob-time, son” or “You can play Super Mario Smash Brothers until Bob-time, then you have to get ready for bed.” He knows that 8:08 is Bob-time. When I told him this morning that today is Double-Bob Day, he was excited. Tonight around 8:08 we’re going to have a Sponge-Bob DVD party.

Since this is the only Double-Bob Day in this century, why not take advantage of it? Call someone that you know named Bob and tell them how much they mean to you – or just harass them or something. Download pictures of Bob Hope and Bob Dole and use them as your desktop background. Bob for apples with a guy named Robert. Play some music that you can bob your head to. Plan a weekend Bob-B-Q.

Dog Days of Summer Bullet Points

  • -Yesterday I let Josiah play Wii for 11 hours and 18 minutes. (Nintendo Wii has a feature that shows gameplay time for the day.) Am I a bad Dad? He cleaned his room.

  • -I love my new job as Independent Living Coordinator. Although I officially work for Eastern Kentucky University, I will be working with foster care teens who are aging out of the system here locally. The really handy part is that now I work in the same building as my wife. I'm missin' my Job Corps thugs though.

  • -Baby Rianna has been babbling a lot of phrases that sound an awful lot like "dada".

  • -This morning I wore a black, short-sleeve shirt, the kind that you don't tuck in, to church. That, combined with my spiky hair, made me look a lot like Rick Warren. Oddly, my bass playing was not purpose driven.

  • -In July we went to Holiday world for a wonderful time of standing in line all day in the oppressive heat with 3 kids. As we stood in line for most of the day, my mind turned to the same thing I always think about when I go to theme parks - how's the Judgment Day area going to be set up? I always wonder about this whenever I'm at an airport, a theme park, or anyplace with architecture designed for a lot of people. It will need be a space where billions of people will be able to a fit in. I'm assuming it will be a comfortable place, where everyone will eventually need to funnel in to one area for judgment. I imagine there may be really big screens maybe for viewing the highlights and lowlights of people's lives (although I don't have a scripture for that part). It will need to be a relatively flat place I guess. I'm wondering if there will be long lines, like the one for the log ride. Maybe people will try to chicken out the closer it gets to their time. With so many billions of people in one place, will there be funnel-cakes and stuff? And what about the people who are really evil, like the guy who shot the pope? Will they get to cut the line and go straight through? Maybe my thinking is all wrong and Judgment Day won't be anything like a big public event. Still, when I'm in big crowded areas, I always wonder about the specifics, like if there will be moving sidewalks and signs that are all in symbol language because of all the different languages spoken.
  • Mike Week 2008

    • Jun. 12th, 2008 at 9:10 PM
    wha?
It's Mike Week. My wedding anniversary (8 years) was on Tuesday, my birthday (42) is Saturday, and Father's Day is Sunday. I'm honored 3 different ways in one week, which happens every year. I like Mike Week a lot because I like me. But this year I'm using this week to reflect upon one thing: how do I make my life NOT about me?

As a husband, I shouldn't be selfish. The same thing goes for being a dad. The entire belief system that I ascribe to lends itself to selflessness. In fact, as a follower and servant of Jesus, this ongoing relationship should be the cure for selfish living. I'm inspired by the lives of others, both living and promoted, who fully understand and live selfless lives. While the concept of piety gives me a warm-glow kind of feeling, I find it hard to focus otherward in my day to day life. So.. happy Mike Week to me. May I somehow become less this week. Maybe I should make my user pic smaller. Nah.

    At Long Last, The Bed

Next month I will be married for 8 years. When we first got married, Jennifer and I had a nice little queen-size bed. I should have underlined "little". I'm a fairly big guy who was not used to even sharing a bed. I hated it, and suggested that we get a bigger bed. We never did. There was always something else that we could better spend our $$ on, so we put it off and put it off.

Now, 7 years and 3 kids later, we REALLY need a bigger bed, because you never know how many crumb-crunchers may end up snuggling with you by morning. I remember the night that Jen and I made the decision to go ahead and get a new king-size bed. I was jubilant. No more nights of me ending p on the couch or one of the kids' beds because of my thrashing-aroundness. Yay. Let's go shopping.

As it turned out, the internet had the best deal. We ordered the bed in January, being assured that it would arrive soon. It arrived in February, with a piece busted. We had to reject the order and have the company re-ship. That shouldn't take long, right? February turned into March, which turned into April. This whole time we were sleeping on the king-sized mattress on the floor (which we thankfully bought from a different company.)

Many, many (sigh) emails and phone calls later, finally on May 5 - the bed arrived!! And what a bed it is! I wasn't sure exactly what my wife had ordered, but apparently it's the biggest bed known to man! This monkey is huge. There are drawers all around underneath, which eliminate the need for other furniture in the room (good thing). And get this - when I'm laying down on the bed, I can lift my leg and touch the ceiling fan with my big toe! The bed came with a little step-ladder thingee so we could actually get up there. Gravy! I have a bed so huge that I actually have to mount it. If any of you ever come to my house, you won't be impressed by our vehicles or yard, but YOU GOTTA SEE THIS BED.

    Things I Pondered Whilst Mowing

  • What mental process does a person have to go through to wake up in the morning and think, "Hey, I think I'll go get a neck tattoo today." ?

  • I need to complete my critical performance paper for my college class soon. The problem is, so far the paper is very reflective. On the other hand, my reflection paper which is also due this month is quite critical. I wonder if this will affect my grade.

  • I wonder if we have any Claritin left from last season.

  • What's the tension between the early Church's mandate to "make disciples" and the current thrust to "plant churches"?

  • Every Autumn I tell myself that in the Spring I'll tune up the lawnmower, putting a new spark plug in, getting new blades, etc. Then every Spring I just put gas in it and start mowing.

    A Sunday School First

    wha?
This morning I didn't feel well and was unable to go to church. Not being able to teach my Sunday School class, I sent the discussion notes by my wife. The class had a question about something in the notes, so Jennifer called me and put me on speakerphone. Then and there I was able to explain religious fatalism to my Sunday School class.. while at home sitting on the toilet! It's a high-tech world we're living in.

I Want To Be A Tetris Christian

    Hmmm
I want to be a Tetris Christian

Have you ever met someone whose faith and walk seemed to be independent of circumstances? I have. I aspire to be one of them; a person who can find a place for anything that life throws at them; a person who can take whatever comes in a manner that gives them a platform of faith to stand on - a solid wall, instead of a disheveled mess. From time to time we can be thrown some pretty odd pieces. I want a relationship that is so solid that the odd-shaped pieces all fit together.

I stick with livejournal mainly for the friends. I love checking my "friends" page for updates to everyone else's blog. I've never been much of a myspace guy because the pages look so helter-skelter. I've flirted with getting a Twitter account, but I don't know anyone who is on that network, so what would be the point? But I am using tumblr, one of the easiest quick-and-dirty pleasing to the eye micro-blogs out there.

I'm using tumblr as a temporary web home for our young adults group, First Circle. It's way easy to update, and has some nice templates and widgets. It's free. And yes, you can enable comments by editing the CSS and using a third party client. I'll probably stick with LJ for a long time, but tumblr is proving to be fun to play with.
